Labor Negotiations: USEC and Gulf Ports
There are mounting tensions centered on the possibility of a strike at the US East Coast and Gulf Ports. The labor contract between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) expires at the end of September 2024. The ILA is the largest maritime workers' union, representing over 65,000 dockworkers, and the USMX represents the employers at 36 coastal ports, including New York, Jew Jersey, Savanna, Georgia, and Houston, Texas. Negotiations have been ongoing since early 2023 with no agreement. Automation at the ports and wage increases are among the major sticking points. The leadership of the ILA has warned their membership to be prepared for the possibility of a coastwide strike in October 2024 with no chance of an extension of the current contract.
The ILA is taking a firm stand against automation by ocean carriers. They view it as an attempt for foreign-owned companies to replace their jobs with fully automated terminals. Some view that automation would bring new and better jobs for labor. This view is not shared by the unions.
The possibility of a strike is a cause for concern among retailers with many expected to advance their peak season freight or move their cargo via the West Coast to avoid potential shipping delays in October.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
