Red Sea / Gulf of Aden Update
The security situation in the Red Sea has remained unstable over the past few weeks with recent additional attacks on commercial vessels from the global ocean carriers. The heightened risk lead Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM to declare Force Majeure on sailing the Red Sea. Several other steamship lines temporarily suspended traffic via the Red Sea and Suez Canal with some rerouting vessels via the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Transit times for this alternate route are considerably longer resulting in cargo arrival delays and higher operational costs. Additionally, it has been difficult for global carriers to communicate vessel arrival information.
Most major carriers have implemented emergency surcharges for diverted vessels with the potential for ripple effects across all trade lanes taking hold. Coupled with Peak Season Surcharges and GRI’s, the additional new surcharges may include:
- Transit Disruption Surcharges
- Contingency Surcharges
- Operational Recovery Surcharges
- Emergency Revenue Surcharges
- Incremental Red Sea Charges
Vessel diversion impact is not limited to extended transit times with floating arrival dates and higher rates. Global tight capacity, blank sailings, and worsening congestion particularly in the Panama Canal can all be anticipated. The duration and severity depend on how long the situation in the Middle East lasts.
In response to the escalating risk, a U.S.-led multi-national effort named Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) has been deployed in the region aimed to protect commercial traffic. Following the US Department of Defense response, Maersk and CMA CGM are resuming vessel routing through the Suez Canal with military escorts.
While the OPG deployment ramps up, the current situation in the region and the ocean liners’ status will remain highly fluid.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as they are released by the carriers.
