Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Emergency Surcharge
As announced by the President’s Task Force this week, effective November 1, 2021 the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will charge the ocean carriers a “Container Excess Dwell Fee” on import full containers.
- The fee will be applied to all containers scheduled to move via truck that remain at the terminal in excess of 8 days and to all containers scheduled to move via rail that remain at the terminal in excess of 5 days.
- The cost is $100 per containeron the first day past the set dwelling limit for terminal or rail and will increase by $100 increments for each day that follows (i.e., $200 for day 2, $300 for day 3 and so on) until the container leaves the port.
Many carriers have disclosed that they intend to pass this charge on to the merchants. As such we are forced to pass it through to our customers when applicable.
The surcharge is meant to help clear the congestion at the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex that has reached record proportions. Additionally, the corresponding revenue is purposed to be invested in port infrastructure and efficiency programs.
DGX is working diligently to avoid or at the very least minimize the impact of this new surcharge to our customers by facilitating cargo movement as it is made available by the port terminals.
We will provide updates as new information is released. Please contact your DGX Representative for more details.
