Chicago Rail Delays
The Chicago rail ramps are experiencing increased delays and congestion caused by multiple issues, including but not limited to, chassis shortages, labor shortages, and driver shortages – all of which have increased container dwell time at the ramps. Multiple carriers tried to address this in July by suspending rail movement of containers from West Coast ports for one week to try and allow for the rail to catch up. However, it has been reported that there are still more than 20 miles of trains of containers lined up outside of the Chicago area waiting for deramp. Many carriers are now trying to address congestion by moving the dwelling containers to secondary facilities.
As Chicago is a major rail hub, even containers which do not originate from or terminate at Chicago will require movement through Chicago – which compounds the congestion. Containers are arriving at the hub faster than the rail can move them out. The end result is that many rail ramps are experiencing congestion and Chicago is at the center of it. Delays at Chicago and other rail ramps are likely to continue through the rest of 2021 as part of the larger congestion felt throughout the entire shipping industry.
Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Congestion
The congestion reported in the previous months continues to compound in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The congestion is causing vessel delays as they wait for space at the dock, delays for truckers as the container pick up and delivery times at the terminals increase, and higher aggregated equipment detention and chassis rental charges as appointments at the terminals become more difficult to obtain without delays.
There have also been reports of shortages of equipment, chassis, and available truckers at Southern California inland rail ramps. These shortages are causing similar delays and additional charges similar to those we are experiencing in Southern California ports.
DGX is working diligently to minimize additional detention and chassis charges caused by the port situation. We work to keep our customers regularly updated on their shipment’s status and any additional charges caused by delays due to congestion.
